IngredientWerks is a pioneering company focused on enhancing the natural protein capacity in plants to design and produce customized ingredients for the alternative protein market. The company leverages broad acre crops like corn as manufacturing hosts, eliminating the need for expensive scale-up technologies such as fermentation bioreactors. This approach allows for more sustainable and cost-effective production of food and feed. Over the past 20 years, the team has successfully produced numerous animal proteins in corn and developed commercial feed enzyme products, achieving their initial goal of making alternative protein production affordable and customizable. However, many of these offerings have yet to meet the taste, nutrition, and cost requirements necessary for broad consumer adoption and long-term economic viability. IngredientWerks was formed in June 2022 by a scientific team from MIT to close this feasibility gap, which poses a significant risk to the market value of the alternative protein industry.
