Nederlandse Spoorwegen

Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) is the main passenger railway operator in the Netherlands and is headquartered in Utrecht. Established through the merger of earlier railway companies, it is a state-owned enterprise overseen by the Dutch Ministry of Finance. NS is responsible for the vast majority of domestic train services in the country, operating approximately 4,800 scheduled trains daily and transporting over one million passengers.

The company’s operations are structured across multiple divisions. NS Operations handles train services and maintenance across the national rail infrastructure, including high-speed connections. NS Stations oversees more than 400 train stations, focusing on optimizing passenger services and improving intermodal connectivity. NS International coordinates cross-border train services in collaboration with European partners, offering connections to countries such as Belgium, France, and Germany.

Previously, NS also managed international operations through its subsidiary Abellio, which ran rail and bus services in the UK and Germany. However, these operations were divested by 2024, with the UK branch transferred to Transport UK Group and the German unit sold to BeNEX.

NS places strong emphasis on sustainability and innovation. It has set a target to become fully emission-free by 2040 and has implemented circular economy strategies across its operations. Complementing its rail services, NS offers integrated mobility options such as the OV-fiets bicycle rental system, designed to support seamless first- and last-mile travel for passengers.

Despite challenges including network congestion and variable demand, Nederlandse Spoorwegen continues to evolve, focusing on reliability, efficiency, and environmental responsibility in its mission to provide high-quality public transportation throughout the Netherlands.
